Election activity on the part of House Republicans had been heavily vetted by multiple attorneys - including a former US attorney. As for the "banishment" rumors, Rep. Reynolds violated a major caucus rule: everyone MUST vote for the Caucus choice for Speaker on the floor. Reynolds blatantly broke that rule, and the punishment is very clear: expulsion.
