Wednesday, January 24, 2007 GOP Shying Away From Tax-Cut Push

OKLAHOMA CITY -- House Republican leaders appeared to be softening their bid for more income-tax cuts Tuesday, saying they will wait to see what happens with natural gas prices.
"We are supportive of more tax cuts, but we want to be prudent in our approach," said Rep. Ken Miller, a member of House Speaker Lance Cargill's leadership team.
Miller, R-Edmond, said the GOP leaders "want to have a better handle on the revenue picture for the upcoming year" before expanding a call for tax cuts.
He did not rule out the possibility, however.
"I hope the governor would support lowering income tax that historically has been one of the highest in the entire country," Cargill said.
In 2006, before Oklahoma's latest income-tax cut, the state was rated 25th in the nation in the income-tax category, according to information provided by the Federation of Tax Administrators. Read more...
